Krojimo za noćni marš (Tailoring for the Night March)
selma banich is an artist, activist, community organizer, expressive art therapy practitioner, and SLC operator. Her artistic practice is explorative, process-driven, and rooted in activism, politically inspired by anarchism and feminism. Banich works independently and in collaboration with other artists, curators, communities, and initiatives across the Balkans. As a choreographer and performer, she has participated in numerous dance, theater, opera, and film productions. She is active in local and transnational solidarity initiatives connected to the ongoing feminist, anti-colonial, anti-fascist, migrant, and workers’ struggles, including Zagreb Solidarity City, Solidarityline Balkans, For BREAD, Strike for Gaza, and Unbowed Palestine. A recipient of several fellowships and accolades, including Akademie Schloss Solitude, MuseumsQuartier Artist-in-Residence Program, and the Nada Dimić Award with the Women to Women and Sloga collectives.
We gathered around love; we gathered out of rage. We came together around sewing machines, scissors, needles, threads, and yarn in all the colors of freedom and self-determination. We gathered to take to the streets and declare: We come united! We marched for and with women around the world, for sisters and brothers on the move, awaiting asylum, in hiding, in captivity, deported, and for those who are no longer with us. A few days before the COVID-19 lockdown, members of the Women to Women collective took to the streets of Zagreb to mark International Women’s Day by joining the Night March, organized by the feminist collective fAKTIV, carrying the seven-meter-long protest banner They Can’t Kill Us All. The banner, sewn from pieces of fabric and colorful yarn, was created during a ten week workshop by women from five continents, speaking seventeen languages, who call Zagreb their home.
