Milijana Babić
Pauza (Pause)
Milijana Babić is a multimedia visual artist based in Rijeka, Croatia. She studied art at the Durban Institute of Technology in Durban, South Africa (BFA, 2001), and at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Ljubljana, Slovenia (MFA, 2007). Her artistic practice has a performative basis and explores her own position as a woman and an artist within her immediate living environment. Her work often takes the form of contextually specific, long-term actions in public or semi-public spaces, which may be participatory, or performative interpretations of material gathered through research and performed for the camera. Since the early 2000s, she has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the region and internationally.
Conceived as a twelve-month cycle, Pauza (Pause) unfolds across multiple media that complement one another and respond to the exhibition space. These include a handout wall calendar for the current year, a series of 12 posters installed in the gallery windows that engage random passers-by, and a two-channel video installation. The photographs are staged within improvised scenographic settings in the artist’s private living space. Engaging with the statements of other women, the artist constructs a space where personal experience intersects with the collective. By assuming the role of the model, she reclaims control over her own representation, challenging socially constructed images of menopause. This approach highlights the complexity of women’s experiences and unsettles representational regimes that render menopause invisible or stereotypical. The work is based on a two-year artistic research period, exploring experiences of menopause and aging, and involved approximately 200 participants of different generations. Together with the artist’s book Afterparty, it forms a conceptual unit.
